My Path

My mission is to create a peaceful world.  This mission empowers my work as a transformational coach and Zen priest.  I believe this peace is nurtured through a compassionately wise relationship with ourselves and flows into our personal and professional relationships on a daily basis.

In Buddhism there is a saying that dharma gates are numberless; the situations and challenges we are faced with in life are opportunities to learn and grow from. At each gate, I have discovered tools, insights and practices. I have created a consistent compassionate relationship with myself over the years through embracing these practices. These practices I share with my clients.

In my 30’s, I suffered bouts of depression through a significant dependence on alcohol.   Beginning in 2005, I delved into the process work of the Mankind Project, helping me to understand and embrace my emotions.

In 2009, I moved back to Rhode Island to be a caregiver for my beloved grandmother who suffered from dementia.  Stepping into this compassionate role only opened my heart further, calling me to my work as a coach and spiritual guide.

In 2011, I was certified as a professional coach by the highly regarded Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching.

In the spring of 2017, I authored the “30 Days to Fostering Greater Self-Compassion” Program,  an interactive coaching support program that offered clients the 15 key elements to deepening their relationship with themselves.

Since 2015, my spiritual growth has found its home in Zen Buddhism.  My daily meditation & Qi Gong practices foster a connection to my deeper nature, the Essence of Life.  Through my greater awareness and mindful living, I find joy and fulfillment.  I am grateful for the inner peace and well-being this practice has nurtured.

On June 24, 2022 I was ordained as a Zen priest through the Hollow Bones Zen Order.  In the spring of 2022 I founded the ZendoME Sangha of Damariscotta, Maine which is a sacred community for cultivating compassionate wisdom through the teachings of the dharma.

Don Sorterup Coaching is an integration of my thirty years of small business experience combined with my passion for personal and professional growth work. I offer a balanced, grounded, and mindfulness based approach to my work as a transformational coach.

I love to play in the ocean whether it be sailing, kayaking or open water swimming.  My artistic endeavors include haiku and photography.
My cozy home is nestled in the middle of an apple orchard in Damariscotta, Maine.
